Only read this if you don't want to pay an ungodly amount of cash for a detox or cleanse diet plan and you would rather detox naturally.
Never mind the bogey man in dark corners of your home I would be more concerned about the faceless killers that lurk in many of the things we consume and touch every day.
We are constantly being exposed to toxins in our everyday lives. They are in our food supply, our beauty products, other common things we use every day and even the air that we breathe.
These chemicals build up in our system and can adversely affect our health and put our hormones into complete imbalance and for women over 50 that means a whole host of issues.
Signs that we are in need of a detox can be and are not limited to:
- belly fat
- foggy brain
- skin problems
There is a little bit of good news
There is no scientific evidence to support the claims that detox diets or cleanse diets will rid us of toxins, so put your wallet away, breathe and ignore all of the websites offering miracle detox plans.
The body is truly an amazing thing in that it is quite capable of eliminating toxins of its own accord.
There is a caveat
A body stressed due to poor health does not work optimally. Therefore it is a good idea to support our bodies in its job. We can do this through good diet, sleep, movement and mindfulness.
What about the crazy birthday weekend I had?
If you live a moderately healthy life with some exercise, limited alcohol and stress your latest birthday indulgences are not going to put much of a dent in your health. As soon as your return to your normal pattern so will your body.
Detox Naturally By Doing The Following:
1. Limit alcohol
More than 90% of the alcohol we drink is metabolized by our liver.
Excessive consumption can damage the liver, therefore, impairing its ability to eliminate toxins..
2. Get adequate sleep
Ensuring adequate and quality sleep supports our health and therefore our body’s ability to detox.
3. Drink plenty of water
Water helps to regulate your body’s temperature, lubricate joints, aid digestion and nutrient absorption, and detoxifies your body by removing waste products. 2-3 litres a day is a good quantity to aim for.

4. Reduce your intake of sugar and processed foods
Excess consumption of sugar and processed foods are linked to obesity, diabetes, inflammation and many other chronic health conditions.
Due to the damage that some of these conditions can do the organs responsible for eliminating waste, our body’s ability to detox is severely restricted.
5. Eat antioxidant rich foods
Antioxidants protect your cells from damage caused by free radicals (unstable atoms).
6. Eat plenty of prebiotics
Prebiotics is a fibre that feeds the good bacteria in your gut. Examples would be tomatoes, artichokes, bananas, asparagus and leafy greens.
7. Decrease salt intake
Consuming too much salt can cause your body to retain water meaning we urinate less to rid ourselves of toxins.
Movement helps our body to reduce inflammation. Any inflammation in the body can hinder our body’s systems including its ability to detoxify.

9. Skin care products
Creams, sun-block and cosmetics can contain toxins such as parabens, petrochemicals and even lead.
Not only are these things bad for your skin but they can be absorbed into your bloodstream and are bad for your gut which will, in turn, hinder detoxification.
10. Cleaning products
These products are the perfect storm of toxins that can cause serious damage to our health.
Make your own products at home or take care to purchase non-toxic products.
Beware, If a product is labelled green or biodegradable it does not mean it is non-toxic so take care to check out the label.
11. Limit drinking from plastic.
I recommend avoiding drinking from plastic in order to reduce waste but also to avoid toxins like BPA which is known to imitate estrogens in the body. There are BPA free plastics available to us however it is still a good idea to avoid them if you can.
To allow our bodies to detoxify efficiently, eat a healthy whole food diet, avoid exposure to toxins through your skin, get a good amount of sleep and exercise on a regular basis. Simple really!
